The roots of the city of StAlbans can be dated back centuries to the time of the Romans. It was named after Alban Britain’s first Christian martyr. He was a citizen of Verulamium a town of much significance in the Roman era. In the 5th century however Verulamium fell into decay but its materials were used to build the famous Abbey and Cathedral.
Many of St Alban’s historical buildings and sites remain today and provide much tourism for the city. A lot of these buildings date back to the 15th Century, including Clock Tower and the St Alban’s Street Market which is still held every Wednesday and Saturday.
St Alban’s may have a deep historical past, but this does not mean the town is based in the past. There are many new retail and commercial areas opening up in the city centre and on the outskirts of the city. Two of these Christopher Place and The Maltings, have encouraged many new shops and superstores to open up in the town. Whilst a Savacentre one of the largest hypermarkets in the United Kingdom is located in nearby London Colney, minutes away from St Albans.
There have also been many businesses moving into St Albans and the area has been keen to welcome them, with new business parks and facilities built to accommodate them, including Griffiths Way, London Road and Riverside Estate.
With new businesses coming to St Albans and the lowest unemployment rate in Hertfordshire, many people are now moving to St Albans to capitalise on this, many of these people are young families looking to set up home for the first time. Thankfully St Albans has an excellent reputation for provided first rate education, it has 50 primary schools and 11 secondary schools, one of the country’s largest Further Education Centres and one of the campuses of the University of Hertfordshire is based in the city centre.
Activities outside of work are not forgotten too. There are five major leisure centres in the city, including Batchwood Hall with its golf course and LTA backed indoor tennis centre. The city’s football, cricket, bowls and hockey clubs are based at Clarence Park. Whilst the Alban Area is a 800 seat fully-equipped theatre and conference centre.
