Welwyn Garden City stands a fine testament to the grand vision of one pioneer, Ebenezer Howard, and the designs entail those of Louis de Soissons. Howard's idea was to help ease the overcrowded areas in the city of London, hence, Welwyn Garden City was established.
Building began in the 1920s, where the first few houses were completed by The Welwyn Garden City Company. Among the many buildings now is the Howard Centre, though Neo-Georgian in style, was opened in 1990. There are a large number of leading electronics companies, high tech food processing chains, like, the Shreaded Wheat factory or the 'palace of crystal' which was situated near Hertfordshire's Hollywood, Garden City Film Studios at the time and healthcare services such as The Queen Elizabeth II, which was opened by Her Majesty, the Queen in 1963.
Shopping in Welwyn Garden City includes a large John Lewis department store, and also the popular Howard Centre, which provides has several superb shops including WH Smith, Sony, and Dixons, plus excellent car parking services with two multi-storey carparks within a short walk from the shops. There are many facilities to cater for both parents and shoppers alike, including Mothercare for mothers with baby facilities, public toilets, disability facilities, public telephones and much more.
Stanborough park is situated on the outskirts of Welwyn Garden City, just of junction 4 of the A1(M). It is set in 126 acres of parklands and has much to offer families and individuals. There are two lakes - one offers rowing and boating, with the other offering courses including sailing and windsurfing. There is a cafe, play area, crazy golf and a nature trail also in the park area.
